Check Your Rig Out!

A Smart Owner's Guide to
Safer, Longer-Lasting Rigging

While many yacht owners spend hours maintaining the hull and deck, the rigging is often left to chance – “if it hasn’t broken, it’s fine,” right?

Unfortunately, that assumption can be costly. Corroded terminals, cracked fittings, or fatigued wire don’t always show obvious signs – until they fail. And by then, it's usually too late. We’ve seen firsthand how regular rig inspections can save not just money and time – but boats, masts, and lives.

Here’s what to know – and how our professional rig inspection services can help keep you sailing safely.

Daily & Seasonal Care: What You Can Do

Freshwater Rinsing and Polishing

  • Saltwater and tropical sun are harsh – rinse your rig after every sail.
  • Polish stainless components several times a year to fight corrosion.

Visual Checks

  • Look for rust spots, pitting, cracked terminals, or broken wire strands.
  • Photograph questionable areas and send them to our team for quick, expert assessment.
  • Lubricate threaded stainless parts – galling (cold welding) is common in this climate.

Not sure what to look for? We'll inspect it for you – professionally and affordably.

Inspection Levels: DIY vs Professional

Level A: DIY Visual

Recommended once per year. Check spreaders, terminals, chainplates, fittings – and keep a log.

Good for spotting the obvious – but not a substitute for a trained eye.

Level B: Professional – Mast In

Conducted by Phuket Yacht Services technicians:

  • Sheave and terminal assessment, lubrication, rig tensioning, and complete visual inspection.
  • Ideal annually (or every 2 years for lightly used vessels).
  • Includes full reporting with photos and recommendations.

Level C: Professional – Mast Out

A full mast-down service, including:

  • Disassembly, cleaning, dye testing, rod re-heading, fibre rigging pull-tests, and component replacement.
  • Recommended every 6 years or 40,000–60,000 nautical miles, depending on rig type.

Book your Level B or C inspection now to stay ahead of failures. We service yachts of all sizes and rig types – and we're your trusted rigging specialists in Phuket.

Rigging Lifespans and When to Replace

The information below is intended as a general guide, based on recommendations from leading rigging manufacturers and marine industry standards. Actual lifespans can vary significantly depending on your yacht's size, usage, environment, and maintenance practices.

Important: Insurance requirements for rigging replacement can differ widely depending on your yacht’s flag state, insurer, and region of operation. We strongly recommend checking with your insurance provider and port of registry to ensure compliance. Use this guide to help plan and budget for major rigging work — especially if your yacht is approaching a key mileage or age milestone.

Rigging Type Baseline Lifespan Key Inspection Notes
Stainless Wire 8–14 years Every 6 yrs / 40k nautical miles Replace at first sign of corrosion or strand breakage
Rod Rigging 10–20 years As above Re-head rods; replace screws as needed
PBO Fibre 2–3 years Frequent visual Replace based on load cycles and mileage
Kevlar Fibre 4–6 years Similar to PBO UV and moisture degrade these rapidly
T-Hooks ~1 year for fibre; monitor closely on wire Every inspection Critical failure point – replace proactively

Not sure how old your rig is? We can help identify and assess components – and set a maintenance plan tailored to your sailing style and location.

Phuket’s Climate Demands More Frequent Maintenance

Tropical heat, high humidity, and salt air are tough on metal and fibre. Combine that with occasional pollution near busy harbours or airports, and your rig needs more than just a casual glance.

We suggest and use the following:

  • Lanocote and Tef-Gel for metal protection
  • Dry Moly spray for stainless threads
  • Loctite Blue/Green for secure but removable connections

We also install anti-chafe protection and clean/lubricate hardware using marine-grade products.

Why Keep a Rig Log?

We recommend:

  • Photographing rig terminations, chainplates, and fittings at regular intervals.
  • Recording all inspections, replacements, and tension adjustments.
  • Logging part numbers, rigger notes, and service dates.

Our reports give you all this – ready for your personal records, resale documentation, or insurance.

Final Takeaways

  • Clean, inspect, and photograph your rig regularly.
  • Book professional inspections based on usage and rigging type.
  • Replace aging or damaged parts before they fail – especially T-hooks, fibre cables, and rod ends.
  • Keep a log – or let Phuket Yacht Services handle the full service and documentation for you.
